Joshua Chamberlain, formerly a professor at Bowdoin College, led the 20th Maine at the pivotal battle of Gettysburg. When his men started to run out of ammo and were at risk of being overwhelmed, he ordered a bayonet charge that routed the Confederate troops. Chamberlain also had the honor of commanding the US troops at the surrender ceremony of Robert E. Lee’s army of Northern Virginia in April of 1865.
